Real Madrid boost as Roberto Carlos gets Spanish papers

Real Madrid management are delighted with Roberto Carlos after it emerged yesterday that he would gain his Spanish passport in December.

The Brazilian international wing-back pushed through his EU papers after a clause was written into his contract, signed earlier this year, which would cost him £650,000 if he failed to take up Spanish citizenship. The timing is perfect for Real management as it frees up an extra non-EU slot in their squad ahead of the winter market opening on January 1.

Real Madrid have been linked with River Plate midfielder Javier Mascherano, who is also wanted by Deportivo La Coruna.
