Real Madrid aware of Vieira's Arsenal frustration

Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira won't rule out a summer switch to Real Madrid.

A source close to Vieira told The Sun: "Patrick loves Arsenal dearly and is proud to be the club's captain."

"But he thinks the current defence is lacking when it comes to winning the trophy he wants most - the Champions League."

"He feels let down that the club has not significantly strengthened their defence since last season."

"He believes Arsenal need a top-quality keeper to replace Jens Lehmann, a centre-back to play alongside Sol Campbell and a right-back."

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood, weary of Real after they also tapped up Nicolas Anelka back in 1999, has described their current interest in Vieira as 'irritating'.

Vieira's agent, Steve Kutner, has rubbished a report he was due to meet Real officials in Madrid yesterday.

He said: "I'd be quite happy to be in Madrid in the sunshine. But I'm in rainy Hertfordshire."

"There was a story I was on my way to Spain to meet with Real's people. That is not true."

"I have not had any contact with anyone from Real Madrid. If Real Madrid want to sign Patrick Vieira, they have to contact Arsenal first."
