With 10 minutes to go in the first half of the decisive Group C clash, Ronaldo stooped to reach a cross from Luis Figo and head past goalkeeper Sergei Ovchinnikov.
The Brazilian grinned broadly and repeatedly patted himself on the head as he raced back towards the Real half, celebrating his first headed goal since his arrival at the Spanish club from Inter Milan.
"I've never seen Ronaldo score a goal with his head," said Brazilian team mate Roberto Carlos, suspended for Tuesday's game and commentating for Cadena Ser radio.
"That's a rare sight."
A 1-0 victory for Real took them through to the quarter-finals as runners-up in Group C behind AC Milan.
They will be paired with one of the group winners in the draw for the last eight and Figo is clear about which side he wants to face.
"Personally, I'd like to play Manchester United," Figo told reporters at the end of the game. "I love the atmosphere of the English game."
