Real fans in clashes with police

Real Madrid fans clashed with police here ahead of Wednesday's crucial Champions League Group C encounter with AC Milan at the Bernabeu stadium.

Some fans threw rockets and hurled bottles outside the ground, while others set fire to dustbins, prompting police to respond with baton charges - only to retreat as missiles rained down on them.

Police then charged the fans again and fired plastic bullets to disperse the troublemakers.

Real, the reigning European champions, had to beat the already qualified Italians to keep group rivals Borussia Dortmund of Germany at bay as they chase a quarter-final spot.

Dortmund were Wednesday hosting Lokomotiv Moscow.
