Real eye one summer target

Real Madrid chief Florentino Perez is staying true to form, declaring that the club would be signing just one top-name player next summer.

Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira is the top priority signing Perez has in mind although reports elsewhere in the capital suggest that AC Milan hitman Andriy Schevchenko is also high on the club's summer shopping list.

Perez wants to celebrate Real's centenary with a bang and has been doing everything possible to build a dream team that will deliver the goods in their birthday year.

Vieira has long been linked with a move to the Bernabeu and cited his friend Zinedine Zidane as the best ambassador he could wish for in the Madrid ranks.

Valued at 7 billion pesetas, Vieira is well within Real's budget for next season, and the French ace would partner Claude Makelele in the double pivot position allowing Iván Helguera to perhaps regress to central defence.

Bringing Shevchenko to Spain will be much harder, seeing as he is the heart and soul of the Milan side, he would also come at a price - Real would need to find around 9 billion pesetas to land the out-and-out striker, a high fee when the club already counts on seasoned attackers Raúl González, Fernando Morientes and José Maria Gutierrez. Perez has assured that the other new faces for Real's centenary team would be coming from the youth programme - Francisco Pavón, Raul Bravo and Oscar Miñambres have all been mentioned as the club's players of the future.
