Raul sets new Champions League appearance record

Real Madrid captain Raul set a new record for Champions League appearances when he played his 86th match in Wednesday's quarter-final, first leg against Monaco at the Bernabeu.

Raul broke the previous mark of 85 appearances held by Manchester United's Gary Neville.

Former United player David Beckham, who is now at Real Madrid, was making his 84th appearance in the game against Monaco.

Real have played 101 matches in the Champions League since it began in the 1992-1993 season.

Raul is also the leading scorer in the competition with 44 goals, just five short of the all-time record of 49 set by former Real Madrid player Alfredo di Stefano in the European Cup between 1956 and 1964.

The 26-year-old is also the leading all-time scorer for the Spanish national side with 37 goals in 69 games.
