Raúl And Casillas Set The Standards - Sergio Ramos

Los Blanco rightback Sergio Ramos has praised the team’s two captains, Raúl and Iker Casillas, describing them as the standard bearers for both club and country.

The versatile 22 year defender spoke to Spanish news agency EFE ahead of Real Madrid’s big derbi clash against neighbouring nemesis, Atlético Madrid, touching on numerous subjects from club to country to the current racism row.

“Raúl was a key member of the Spanish national team for many years because he felt deeply for the shirt. Hierro also used to set the standards, as does Casillas now, who is becoming a stronger leader,” said Ramos when asked who he looks up to.

“I hope I will be able to make my mark one day,” he added.

The former Sevilla man was then questioned if he had returned to full fitness following his nagging injuries prior to the international break.

“I feel fine, but it’s not really an injury. I just have minor niggles on my adductor and groin."

“But I have to conserve some energy to remain fit for Real Madrid, especially in the upcoming games against Atlético and Juventus,” he explained.

Finally, Ramos gave his opinion on the issue of racism and crowd troubles that have blighted Spain recently.

“I’m surprised by the English FA’s decision not to play the friendly at the Bernabéu and by UEFA’s decision to close the Vicente Calderón."

“I’ve played in both stadiums and I don’t believe the fans there are racist. Spaniards aren’t racist,” he concluded.

UEFA have since overturned their decision to shut down the Calderón for Atleti’s upcoming game with Liverpool in the Champions League while the Spanish Football Federation and the English FA are still in talks to finalize a February 11 2009 friendly.
