ALAVES 2 SEVILLA 1

A first win for relegation-threatened Alaves under new coach Mario Luna although they were given a scare after being reduced to nine men in the closing stages after the sending-off of Rodolfo Bodipo and substitute Juanito.

Sevilla took the lead in the 11th minute after an improvised volley from Argentine striker Javier Saviola, but then had centre-back Aitor Ocio sent off for handling on the line.

Keeper Andres Palop saved the resulting spot kick from Nene, but the Brazilian atoned for his error when he equalised with a stunning shot from the edge of the area. Bodipo earned his side a vital win with a close-range strike just before halftime.

ATHLETIC BILBAO 1 CADIZ 0

Bilbao grabbed a last-gasp win in this relegation six-pointer thanks to a retaken injury-time penalty from midfielder Tiko after Cadiz defender Alejandro Varela was sent off for a handball on the line.

Javier Clemente's Bilbao faced an uphill battle after defender Fernando Amorebieta was harshly sent off in the 18th minute for trying to tug an opponent's shirt.

ATLETICO MADRID 2 RACING SANTANDER 1

Atletico recorded their seventh win in eight matches thanks to a controversial penalty from Fernando Torres and a Pablo Ibanez header.

Torres netted midway through the second half after midfielder Gonzalo Colsa had appeared to dive.

Racing defender Damia made it 1-1 with a header before Atletico centre-back Ibanez nodded in a corner on 76 minutes.

Atletico midfielder Gabi was sent off in injury time.

OSASUNA 2 BARCELONA 1

Osasuna inflicted a fourth league defeat of the season on leaders Barcelona, who had Brazilian midfielders Edmilson and Thiago Motta sent off.

Former Real Madrid player Valdo put Osasuna in front when he hooked the ball into an open goal after keeper Victor Valdes spilled a cross in the 19th minute.

Captain Patxi Punal made it 2-0 from the penalty spot after Edmilson was harshly dismissed when Osasuna striker Savo Milosevic appeared to dive in the area on 58 minutes.

Substitute Henrik Larsson pulled one back with a fine first time strike 18 minutes from time. Motta was red-carded for a late foul on Pierre Webo.

REAL MALLORCA 1 VILLARREAL 1

Struggling Mallorca extended their unbeaten run to four matches since Gregorio Manzano took charge as coach with this draw against Champions League quarter-finalists Villarreal.

The islanders got off to a dream start when Argentine striker Guillermo Pereyra skimmed a header inside the far post in the second minute. Jose Mari equalised midway through the half when he steered in after a storming run from Josemi.

REAL BETIS 1 MALAGA 1

A result that will do little to satisfy two sides battling hard to avoid the drop.

Centre-back David Rivas gave Betis the lead in the first half when he made the most of sloppy Malaga defending to head home after Joaquin had floated a free kick into the area.

Midfielder Antonio Hidalgo earned his side a point when he poked home after Betis keeper Pedro Contreras had spilled his initial header 17 minutes from time.

REAL ZARAGOZA 1 GETAFE 2

A Veljko Paunovic double gave Getafe their first away win since September and allowed Bernd Schuster's side to leapfrog their opponents to move into the relative safety of 10th place.

Zaragoza took the lead when Argentine international Diego Milito notched his 13th of the season just after the half hour, but Paunovic headed in an equaliser five minutes later.

The home side suffered another blow when Alvaro was sent off for elbowing Paunovic at the start of the second half and the Serbian striker made the most of the extra space to score the winner on the hour.

ESPANYOL 2 CELTA VIGO 0

Celta missed a chance to keep the pressure on for a Champions League place as Espanyol played most of the game with 10 men.

Espanyol took the lead when Raul Tamudo steered into the open net after fellow striker Luis Garcia controlled a long pass and cut the ball back from the byline in the 12th minute.

Defender Armando Sa was controversially sent off as he tangled with Daniel de Ridder in the first half.

Espanyol made light of the setback and Brazilian midfielder Fredson made it 2-0 with a beautifully struck shot from the edge of the area seven minutes from the break.

DEPORTIVO CORUNA 1 REAL SOCIEDAD 0

Sociedad eased their relegation worries by taking their first points in five games as Depor continued their desperate run of form at home.

Depor, who have not won at the Riazor since mid-December, made all the running in the first half before Sociedad caught them cold at the start of the second half when midfielder Gaizka Garitano outjumped two defenders to head home at the near post.

VALENCIA 0 REAL MADRID 0

Substitute Ronaldo spurned the chance to win the game when he missed a last-minute penalty after he had been fouled by Valencia keeper Santiago Canizares.

Scoring chances were scarce in a match dominated by the defences and it was only when Ronaldo earned a penalty after a neat one-two with fellow substitute Antonio Cassano that it looked as though the deadlock might be broken.

Canizares guessed right and saved the Brazilian's poorly taken shot to extend Valencia's unbeaten record to 16 matches.
