BARCELONA 0 ATLETICO MADRID 2

Unfancied Atletico dealt Barca a first home defeat of the season thanks to a Fernando Torres double, a magnificent rearguard action by their defence and a penalty miss from World Player of the Year Ronaldinho.

Torres got Atletico off to a flying start when he clipped home in the opening minute after a spectacular back-heeled assist from Ariel Ibagaza.

Barca responded by laying siege to the Atletico area, but they could find no way around their opponents' back four and Ronaldinho spurned a chance to put his side back in the game when he missed his 70th-minute spot kick.

Torres secured Atletico's win with an injury-time penalty after he was adjudged to have been brought down by Valdes as he raced into the area.

ALBACETE 2 REAL ZARAGOZA 1

A controversial win for Albacete over nine-man Zaragoza came courtesy of two second half penalties from Uruguayan striker Antonio Pacheco.

The visitors took the lead in the 15th minute when Oscar Gonzalez headed in unopposed after a corner, but at the start of the second half the midfielder was sent off after being harshly adjudged to have handled in the area

Pacheco smashed home the resulting penalty and repeated the trick four minutes from time when Zaragoza keeper Luis Garcia was sent off after midfielder Francisco went down in the area.

DEPORTIVO CORUNA 1 ATHLETIC BILBAO 1

Depor scrambled an unlikely point against Athletic thanks to a late penalty from Diego Tristan, the Spanish international blasting home from the spot after substitute Victor went down in the area.

Athletic had taken the lead six minutes into the second half when midfielder Pablo Orbaiz fired an unstoppable 30-metre thunderbolt into the roof of the net.

GETAFE 1 NUMANCIA 0

A seventh win of the season for Primera Liga newcomers Getafe ensured a sorry-looking Numancia are now four points adrift at the bottom of the table.

Cameroon midfielder Daniel Kome scored the only goal of the game with a simple tap-in just before the half hour.

LEVANTE 0 SEVILLA 3

Striker Antonito set Sevilla on their way to a win that propelled them into fourth place in the standings when he toe-poked home after a pin-point cross from Adriano Correia.

Ariza Makukula scored his first goal since returning from a knee injury with a deflected drive early in the second half and substitute Julio Baptista completed victory with a 25-metre free kick five minutes from time.

MALAGA 0 REAL MALLORCA 0

Mallorca could have grabbed a vital win in the second half with Venezuelan striker Juan Arango twice hitting the woodwork and midfielder Alejandro Campano firing into the side netting.

Malaga, however, held on to claim a draw that kept them a point clear of the relegation zone.

REAL BETIS 3 OSASUNA 1

A seventh consecutive home win for Real Betis put them firmly in the race for the Champions League places.

Brazilian midfielder Marcos Assuncao opened with a speculative 40-metre drive that took an odd bounce in the area and hopped over Osasuna keeper Juantxo Elia.

Osasuna hit back seven minutes later when Valdo slotted in from 10 metres out, before midfielder Patxi Punal gifted Betis the lead when he headed into his own net as he tried to clear an Assuncao free kick.

Ricardo Oliveira wrapped up the victory when he beat the offside trap nine minutes from time.

VILLARREAL 2 RACING SANTANDER 1

Villarreal worked hard for their fifth straight win by lowly Racing, who had to play with 10 men for most of the match after defender Walid Regragui was sent off for a second booking after barrelling into Antonio Guayre in the 34th minute.

Uruguayan forward Mario Regueiro put Racing ahead with a 30-metre shot after a 24th minute free kick, before Diego Forlan levelled early in the second half when he slid in at the far post.

Argentine playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme secured the points when he converted a penalty after Rodolfo Arruabarrena had appeared to take a dive in the area midway through the half.

REAL MADRID 4 ESPANYOL 0

Real made it six wins from six under Vanderlei Luxemburgo as they overpowered Espanyol at the Bernabeu to keep the pressure on leaders Barcelona.

Zinedine Zidane blasted into the roof of the net and Raul stretched Real's lead on the half hour when he poked in a rebound from a Luis Figo shot.

Raul diverted Santiago Solari's bobbling pass for his second after the break and Thomas Gravesen scored his first goal for the club when he stroked the ball past Carlos Kameni five minutes from time.

REAL SOCIEDAD 3 VALENCIA 3

Turkish forward Nihat Kahveci capped a brilliant performance with a last-gasp strike to earn Sociedad their first point in six games and prevent Valencia from an undeserved victory.

Valencia took the lead against the run of play when Italy striker Marco Di Vaio fired home in the 10th minute, but Nihat equalised with a spectacular volley from the edge of the area.

Midfielder Mikel Aranburu restored the Sociedad lead 10 minutes from time when he tapped in from close range before a Ruben Baraja header and a crashing volley from Xisco looked set to give Valencia the points before Nihat struck again.
