ATLETICO MADRID 1 DEPORTIVO CORUNA 0

Atletico moved to sixth position in the league and kept their home record spotless with a 1-0 victory over Deportivo, who have now gone four matches without a win.

Fernando Torres, linchpin of the attack, set up the winning goal for Antonio Lopez, 20, in the 28th minute.

Depor were unable to prise open Atletico's defence and sealed their fate when they failed to convert several injury-time chances.

NUMANCIA 0 ESPANYOL 0

Espanyol reclaimed second place in the Primera Liga with a 0-0 draw against rock bottom Numancia.

The hosts looked set to pull ahead at the start of the second half when an error by goalkeeper Juanma left the net unguarded but the Catalans were unable to take advantage.

Espanyol, on 30 points, are nine points behind leaders Barcelona.

REAL MALLORCA 1 OSASUNA 2

Mallorca's problems deepened after a 2-1 home defeat by Osasuna left them one point off the foot of the table.

Valdo found the net twice in eight minutes, first powering in a left-foot drive from the edge of the area in the 33rd minute, then using his right to score his second.

Jesus Perera replied in the 81st minute for Mallorca.

REAL SOCIEDAD 1 GETAFE 1

Sociedad suffered a blow to their ambitions of rising up the table when on-form Getafe held them to a 1-1 draw.

The hosts went ahead with a 71st-minute goal from prolific Turkish marksman Nihat Kahveci.

Real keeper Asier Riesgo was sent off in the 79th minute for bringing down Sergio Pachon and Getafe were given a penalty which Mariano Pernia converted.

REAL ZARAGOZA 0 ATHLETIC BILBAO 2

Athletic bagged their first away league victory of the season with a 2-0 defeat of Real Zaragoza, who found it hard to create scoring opportunities.

Santiago Ezquerro netted following a 54th-minute corner before powering his second goal into an empty net 25 minutes later. But shoulder troubles then forced him off.

The game was Zaragoza's seventh without a victory and left them 14th in the table.

SEVILLA 2 REAL BETIS 1

Sevilla beat Betis 2-1 in a skilful derby that was delayed for about 45 minutes after the referee ruled the visitors should wear a different kit.

The hosts made a strong start when Daniel Alves struck after four minutes but determined Betis equalised before the break through Fernando.

Javi Navarro grabbed the winner for Sevilla in the 47th minute. The victory gave them a firm hold on fifth place in the table.

VILLARREAL 3 MALAGA 0

Villarreal, fresh from a crushing UEFA Cup victory over Egaleo and with playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme on top form, demolished a nervous-looking Malaga 3-0.

The inspired Argentine set up Juan Manuel Pena for a goal in first-half injury time, then scored himself in the 66th minute before laying on the third for Diego Forlan.

BARCELONA 1 VALENCIA 1

Ronaldinho scored a controversial late penalty for Barcelona to secure a 1-1 draw in a sometimes fractious match that brought four-game winning streaks for both teams to an end.

Barcelona dominated the first half and set up a string of scoring opportunities without converting any of them.

Valencia, with winger Vicente back in the side after two months out due to an ankle problem, were more aggressive after the break and went ahead through Stefano Fiore in the 63rd minute.

Barcelona, who went down to 10 men when goalkeeper Victor Valdes was sent off for handling outside the area, equalised with Ronaldinho's 79th-minute penalty.

RACING SANTANDER 2 REAL MADRID 3

Third-placed Real gave their flickering title hopes a boost when an injury-time goal from Zinedine Zidane clinched a 3-2 victory that pulled the Madrid club within 10 points of leaders Barcelona.

The visitors spent much of the match chasing Racing, who twice went ahead.

Israel international Yossi Benayoun gave Racing a 24th-minute lead before Michael Owen levelled 11 minutes later.

Javi Guerrero converted a pass from Benayoun to restore Racing's advantage but Real bounced back with goals from Raul and Zidane.

LEVANTE 1 ALBACETE 1

Levante chalked up their sixth match without a win when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Albacete.

Albacete had a 25th-minute goal ruled out for handball but made amends four minutes later thanks to a strike by midfielder Gaspar that bounced in off the post.

Levante equalised before the break through defender Jose Antonio Culebras.
