Depor continued a poor run of form at home as they struggled to work their way past a determined but limited Albacete.

The Galicians dominated the second half but the closest they came to claiming the points was when midfielder Aldo Duscher hit the post with a long-distance drive.

ESPANYOL 0 VILLARREAL 0

A dour affair at Montjuic as two sides that crashed out of the King's Cup in midweek played safe by paying more attention to avoiding another defeat than going for victory.

Espanyol, who lost leading striker Raul Tamudo with what appeared to be a muscle strain in the second half, came close to stealing the win in the closing minutes but neither side did enough to justify a victory.

NUMANCIA 0 REAL SOCEIDAD 2

Sociedad recorded their first away win of the season and ensured Numancia remain rooted to the foot of the table in the process thanks to second half goals from defender Mikel Labaka and midfielder Valery Karpin.

Labaka turned in from close range after Numancia failed to clear their area midway through the second half and Karpin completed a slick passing move when he ghosted in at the far post 11 minutes later.

OSASUNA 0 LEVANTE 1

Another impressive performance from Bernd Schuster's Levante, who moved into fifth place after inflicting a first home defeat of the season on Osasuna.

Former Barcelona striker Sergio Garcia scored with a well struck low drive from outside the area after turning inside a defender following a quick throw-in on 23 minutes.

REAL BETIS 1 MALAGA 1

Honours even in a bad tempered Andalucian derby that saw both sides end up with 10 men after Malaga defender Marcelo Romero and then Betis scorer Ricardo Oliveira were sent off in the latter stages of the match.

Striker Oliveira had put Betis in front after just five minutes when he crashed the ball into an unguarded net after Edu hit the post with a neat lob.

But they failed to take further advantage of a hesitant Malaga, who hit back just before halftime when midfielder Gerardo scored with an unstoppable free kick from the edge of the area.

REAL MADRID 2 GETAFE 0

Michael Owen grabbed his fourth goal in as many games as he and Ronaldo helped spare the blushes of a disappointing Real who were outplayed by the Primera Liga newcomers for much of the game.

The England striker put Real ahead against the run of play when he tucked a perfectly hit shot inside the far post from outside the area after running on to a pass from Ronaldo.

The Brazilian added a second 11 minutes from time when he netted from close range after a rebound from a Raul shot had bobbled into his path.

REAL MALLORCA 1 RACING SANTANDER 2

A disappointing start for Mallorca caretaker boss Tomeu Llompart, who took over after Benito Floro was fired at the start of last week.

Defender Pedro Lopez put Racing ahead after just three minutes with a cool finish with the outside of his foot after the Mallorca defence failed to clear a Mario Regueiro cross from the left.

Things went from bad to worse for the islanders when defender Fernando Nino was sent off early in the second half but they looked to have saved a point thanks to a great volley from Jorge Lopez only to lose out when Israeli forward Yossi Benayoun grabbed the winner in injury time.

REAL ZARAGOZA 3 SEVILLA 0

Zaragoza bounced back from a humiliating midweek Cup defeat with this sparkling win over second-placed Sevilla.

Argentine winger Luciano Galletti powered home a long-range header after defender Delio Toledo had swept in a cross from the left on 13 minutes.

David Villa doubled the lead with a penalty just before the half hour following a foul on Brazilian winger Savio and grabbed his second 14 minutes after the break as he poked the ball past goalkeeper Esteban off a neat assist from defender Alvaro.

ATHLETIC BILBAO 1 BARCELONA 1

Leaders Barca were held for the only the second time this season by a determined Bilbao who earned a point despite having midfielder Carlos Gurpegi sent off in the 80th minute.

In-form Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o scored his eighth goal of the season to put the visitors ahead with a well judged shot in the 11th minute after debutant right back Damia had lofted in a cross from the right.

But Bilbao hit back almost immediately when highly-rated midfielder Fran Yeste cracked home with a spectacular angled volley after a neat headed assist from strike Ismael Urzaiz.

VALENCIA 1 ATLETICO MADRID 1

Valencia appeared stunned by an early injury to playmaker Pablo Aimar, who was taken to hospital following a nasty blow to the head in a clash with defender Pablo Ibanez.

They failed to find any fluency in their play but still managed to take the lead midway through the second half when Miguel Angel Angulo slotted into an empty net after goalkeeper Leo Franco was caught stranded outside his area.

Atletico looked out of contention when Veljko Paunovic was sent off in the 70th minute but fellow forward Fernando Torres salvaged a point as he outmanoeuvred three defenders and slotted past Santiago Canizares to equalise 10 minutes from time.
