A first point of the season for Albacete, but it was not enough to lift them off the bottom of the table.

Young striker Ruben Castro had another fine game, but was unable to break down the well-organised Mallorca defence.

DEPORTIVO CORUNA 1 VALENCIA 5

A scintillating display of attacking football from last season's champions who gave a sorry Depor no chance at the Riazor.

Italian striker Bernardo Corradi began the rout when he guided in a Ruben Baraja cross-shot at the far post on 17 minutes.

Compatriot Marco Di Vaio made it 2-0 with a spectacular aerial back-heel, while midfielders Vicente and Francisco Rufete made it 4-0 at the break with two more beautifully fashioned goals.

Baraja weighed in with another goal early in the second half before the visitors finally eased up and showed they were human by making a defensive error that allowed Walter Pandiani to claim some consolation just after the hour.

GETAFE 1 ESPANYOL 0

A hard-working and defensive Getafe gained their first ever points in the top flight thanks to an own goal by Espanyol defender Hugo Ibarra.

The former Monaco player turned the ball into his own net when he tried to clear a free kick from midfielder Francisco Gallardo in the 10th minute.

LEVANTE 1 ATLETICO MADRID 0

Unbeaten after the first three games, Atletico slipped to their first defeat against recently promoted Levante, who are managed by their former player Bernd Schuster.

The visitors fell behind when Alberto Rivera converted a controversial penalty after Juan Velasco was adjudged to have fouled Bulgarian striker Vladimir Manchev as the two rose to head the ball.

Levante had several chances to extend their lead and had to weather some late pressure from the visitors but deserved to claim their second win of the season.

MALAGA 4 NUMANCIA 1

A spectacular victory for the Andalucians in a game that featured several candidates for goal of the season.

Midfielder Miguel Angel began the entertainment when he crashed in a volley direct from a corner in the fourth minute.

Paulo Wanchope made it 2-0 when he received the ball with his back to goal on the edge of the area, flicked it up over a defender, swivelled round and then volleyed into the top corner before fellow striker Marcio Amoroso added a third.

Numancia had defender Patricio Graff sent off before the break but they pulled a goal back through Juan Ochoa before Malaga midfielder Jose Juan Luque wrapped up with a superb individual effort.

REAL BETIS 2 ATHLETIC BILBAO 1

Betis grabbed their first win of the season against an unfortunate Bilbao side who are still looking for theirs.

Betis took the lead when Juanito poked home following a corner but the visitors hit back straight from the restart when Fran Yeste raced clear before laying off a neat pass to Ismael Urzaiz who guided home into the empty net.

The Andalucians eventually grabbed the win when centre-forward Fernando headed in a Joaquin cross 12 minutes into the second half.

REAL SOCIEDAD 0 RACING SANTANDER 1

Racing claimed their opening win of the campaign thanks to a sharply taken goal from Mario Regueiro a minute before halftime.

The Uruguayan winger beat the offside trap to race free on the left and then scored with a low shot into the far corner.

Racing looked to have blown their chances when Italian defender Alessandro Pierini was sent off for a reckless challenge on Sociedad striker Darko Kovacevic just before the break, but they held on for the win.

VILLARREAL 0 SEVILLA 0

Neither side was able to take advantage of the few scoring chances in a game dominated by two well-organised defences.

Sevilla will be satisfied by the point but Villarreal will be beginning to get frustrated as they have yet to notch their first win of the season.

REAL MADRID 1 OSASUNA 0

David Beckham struck with a 25-metre free kick to give Real Madrid victory over a subdued Osasuna in their first match in the post-Camacho era and start winning back the support of the club's angry fans.

Beckham's free kick was the one bright moment in an otherwise forgettable match in which Real showed little improvement on their recent poor form.
