Betis were unable to take advantage of their domination at a rain-drenched Ruiz de Lopera, missing a first-half penalty and failing to add the finishing touch to some promising attacking moves.

Depor keeper Jose Molina made amends for bringing down Betis defender Juanito in the area just before the half hour mark when he saved Fernando's poorly struck spot kick to keep the scores level at halftime.

And the Galicians breathed another sigh of relief in the second half when Betis forward Dani was denied a goal after team mate Martin Palermo was penalised for dangerous play for his acrobatic overhead pass.

A first-half strike from Samuel Eto'o was enough to put an end to Sociedad's 20-month unbeaten run at their Anoeta stadium and add further pressure on Raynald Denoueix's side.

The Cameroon striker side-footed past Sander Westerveld after nipping in to snap up a neat though ball from Fernando Correa.

Sociedad fought back after the break, but a combination of some fine goalkeeping from Leo Franco and some determined last-ditch defending kept the Basque side at bay.

VILLARREAL 2 BARCELONA 1

Former Barcelona players Juan Roman Riquelme and Sonny Anderson engineered a deserved win against their ex-employers in an exciting match at El Madrigal.

Riquelme, who was loaned out by the Catalans at the start of the season, bossed the midfield throughout and supplied the corner that led to Jose Mari's opener five minutes before the break.

Although Patrick Kluivert put Barca back on level terms with a sharp close range finish 18 minutes from time, Anderson grabbed the winner in injury time when he launched himself at a fine cross from defender Juliano Belletti to send a diving header into the far corner.
