ATHLETIC BILBAO 2 RECREATIVO HUELVA 0

Athletic claimed a first home win of the season thanks to a double from winger Joseba Etxeberria.

The former Spain international scored his first when he ghosted in at the far post after Andoni Iraola had swept a great pass behind the Recreativo back four and notched his second eight minutes later, snapping home after keeper Stefano Sorrentino failed to clear off his line.

ATLETICO MADRID 3 VILLARREAL 4

Atletico got off to a great start with a Pablo Ibanez header and a superbly struck curler from Simao Sabrosa putting them 2-0 up inside 25 minutes but they let their lead slip before halftime.

Italian striker Giuseppe Rossi hooked in on the half-hour and centre-back Fabricio Fuentes took advantage of an error in defence to smash home from close range after a corner.

Atletico striker Maxi Rodriguez fluffed a penalty early in the second half but team mate Sergio Aguero looked to have spared his blushes when he nodded in on the hour.

The Argentine's efforts were to no avail however and Villarreal snatched a dramatic win when substitute Nihat Kahveci cashed in on further defensive errors to strike twice in the final 20 minutes.

BARCELONA 3 REAL BETIS 0

Barcelona closed the gap on Real with an easy win over the struggling Andalucians.

Thierry Henry put the home side ahead when he struck a low shot under keeper Ricardo after racing on to a great through ball from Andres Iniesta.

Ronaldinho made it 2-0 when he curled a magnificent free kick over the wall eight minutes after the break and wrapped it up with another which crept in at the near post in added time.

LEVANTE 3 ALMERIA 0

A first-half hat-trick from Italian striker Christian Rigano earned Levante their debut win of the season and doubled the Valencian side's goal tally for the present campaign.

Rigano hit his first with just 20 seconds on the clock with a cool finish, made it 2-0 with a clever lofted shot after stealing the ball from a defender and wrapped up when he side-footed home after a great cross from fellow forward Riga.

OSASUNA 0 GETAFE 2

A second win in a row for Michael Laudrup's Getafe whose victory came courtesy of an 80th-minute penalty from Pablo Hernandez and a late strike from midfielder Esteban Granero.

Osasuna defender Cesar Cruchaga was sent off as result of the penalty incident.

RACING SANTANDER 1 ESPANYOL 1

Striker Mohamed Tchite put Racing in front when he netted a rebound after Carlos Kameni had stopped a penalty from Ezequiel Garay 10 minutes after the break and the game looked to have drifted away from Espanyol when Ferran Corominas was sent off for a wild tackle.

Striker Raul Tamudo came to the rescue with a last-minute penalty to earn the Catalans an important away point.

REAL MURCIA 0 DEPORTIVO CORUNA 2

A first win in four games for Depor. Striker Xisco scored the opener early in the second half when he raced clear and fired into the top corner and Mexico midfielder Andres Guardado made sure of the win with another cool finish 18 minutes from time.

REAL ZARAGOZA 2 VALLADOLID 3

A first home defeat of the season for Zaragoza who took the lead through a deflected shot from Ricardo Oliveira in the 13th minute.

Valladolid stormed back with three goals in the space of six minutes, pint-size striker Victor hitting the first two and midfielder Alvaro Rubio adding a wonderful third before Zaragoza had time to react.

Diego Milito's 90th-minute strike came too late for the home side.

REAL MALLORCA 0 VALENCIA 2

Valencia bounced back from their heavy losses against Sevilla and Real Madrid to inflict a first defeat in five games on the islanders thanks to a neatly taken double from Fernando Morientes.

The former Real Madrid striker made the most of two isolated chances against a dominant Mallorca, steering in at the far post on the stroke of halftime and then side-footing home from seven metres out after good work by David Silva just after the hour.

SEVILLA 2 REAL MADRID 0

Quickfire goals from midfielder Seydou Keita and striker Luis Fabiano earned Sevilla a deserved victory in a high-voltage encounter at the Sanchez Pizjuan.

Mali international Keita put Sevilla in front when he sent an unstoppable 25-metre shot fizzing into the back of the net on 19 minutes and Luis Fabiano made it 2-0 before Real had a chance to respond when he smashed home a rebound.

Real were reduced to 10 men early in the second half when former Sevilla defender Sergio Ramos was sent off after picking up a second booking for a foul on Diego Capel.
