Bilbao moved up to fifth place, and spoiled a homecoming for their former coach Luis Fernandez with a narrow victory over the league's basement side.

Andoni Iraola got the only goal after 14 minutes, turning in at the far post from Joseba Etxeberria's pull-back.

The visitors battled hard throughout but could not provide anything to celebrate for Fernandez, the former Bilbao coach who replaced Javier Clemente at Espanyol this week.

DEPORTIVO CORUNA 2 REAL SOCIEDAD 1

Deportivo recovered from their 8-3 Champions League drubbing by Monaco to move back top of the table with a fortunate victory that came via two late own-goals from Igor Jauregi.

Sociedad took the lead after 28 minutes when Nihat Kahveci squeezed a shot past Jose Molina from outside the box.

The game turned after 72 minutes when Jauregi deflected a Joan Capdevila cross past Sander Westerveld. The unfortunate defender got the final touch on a glancing Walter Pandiani header two minutes from time to hand Depor the win.

REAL ZARAGOZA 1 CELTA VIGO 1

Celta's indifferent domestic form continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw by disciplined Real Zaragoza.

Celta, who scored a brilliant 3-2 win over Ajax Amsterdam in midweek, continued where they had left off in the Champions League with a headed goal from Jose Ignacio in the fourth minute.

But Zaragoza hit back five minutes later with a crashing volley from Leonardo Ponzio and the visitors only rarely threatened to score a second. Jesuli missed their best chance, hitting the bar when through on goal late on.
