Brazilian midfielder Thiago Motta put Barca ahead on 34 minutes when he headed in a Ronaldinho free kick at the far post, but Sociedad scored twice at the start of the second half, through an Igor Jauregi header and a Javi de Pedro penalty.
Barca got back on level terms when substitute Marc Overmars drilled in midway through the second half, but the Basques appeared to be on course for victory when Valery Karpin headed in minutes later and Motta was dismissed for arguing with the referee.

Villarreal got their first win in five outings, although they were helped by some poor finishing from opponents Osasuna.
