The People says Beckham still commands huge commercial value to the club, but Real believe his worth will begin to fall over the next two years as he is relegated to a peripheral role in coach Fabio Capello's team.

A Real insider said: "Beckham is worth more to the club off the pitch than he is on it."

"But as he begins to spend more time on the bench there is also a feeling that his popularity will begin to fall."

"It's true that Real are ready to offer him the option to stay, but he must be prepared for some tough negotiations because he is no longer untouchable."

Beckham is free to speak to other clubs in January. He may want to clinch a more lucrative deal to stay in Madrid.

West Ham and Arsenal have been linked with the former England captain in recent weeks.
