Portuguese Press divided over Figo's semi retirement

The Portuguese press were divided in their reactions to the semi-retirement of Real Madrid attacking midfielder Luis Figo.

The 31-year-old announced he would no longer play for the national side but left the door open for a possible return after failing to win any international championships during his international career.

However this lack of clarity did not impress the daily newspaper Publico.

"Either you quit or you continue. To have one foot in and one foot out is not worthy of Figo," Publico said in its editorial.

"His departure form the national team, shortly after Zidane (France), showed that the great footballers know when to leave with dignity ... then came the disappointment. Figo is leaving but not really. He announced just a break."

The sports newspaper A Bola said Figo had every right to take a break and could return for the World Cup in Germany in 2006.

"Come back whenever you want," said the daily A bola. "Portugal can't turn its back on Figo and must accept" his eventual return, the newspaper said.

Figo has for years been Portugal's standout player having won 110 caps and scored 31 goals.
