Real Madrid chairman Florentino Perez has declared that the club is back in the black after clearing debts of more than $US 305m.

Perez told an audience at Madrid's Business Studies Institute that the Spanish champions can start the new season with a clean slate after selling one of the club's training grounds to the city council.

The Real Madrid chairman wanted to point out that the club is now in a "healthy" state and able to compete with the rest of Europe's richest clubs.

During the seminar, Perez spoke about many of the players that are currently on the club's
agenda.

Regarding Valencia ace, Gaizka Mendieta, he said: "He's a great player and we like him a lot. He wants to join us too, but we're not going to pay £37m ($US 52m) for him."
