Pellegrini defends Real Madrid after Athletic Bilbao defeat

Athletic Bilbao striker Fernando Llorente added to his reputation with the winner against Real Madrid.

Spain striker Llorente nodded home from a corner after just two minutes and the home team held on for a fine win, Athletic goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz denying the visitors with a string of great saves.

The Basques were reduced to 10 men in stoppage time when Carlos Gurpegi was sent off for a second bookable offence but there was no time for the capital club to capitalise on their numerical advantage.

Real coach Manuel Pellegrini said: "We created enough chances to win."

"There was only one team playing football, but you need luck and precision to convert your chances."

"When you lose, then there is something you did not do well."

He added: "There are a lot of games remaining, including all the return matches."

"Now what is important is to beat Malaga at home. With 60 points remaining, this is not a defining result."

"We have the spirit and desire to win the league."
