Owen Should Leave Liverpool - Toshack

Michael Owen should leave Liverpool, according to Anfield legend John Toshack.

The Welshman, who has managed Real Madrid, believes Owen should sample life outside of England and fulfil his potential by playing in the Champions League.

Owen was quoted as saying yesterday that he needed to play in Europe's top competition and Liverpool's failure to qualify again this season could signal the end of his time at the club.

Toshack told The Sun: "I really don't think it would be in Michael's interests to sign an extension at this stage."

"Michael has demonstrated his commitment to Liverpool. But I understand what he means when he says he needs to be playing Champions League football."

He added: "I'd advise any British player to sample life on the continent at the highest level."

"Playing and living abroad makes you a more mature person. A new culture, a new environment and a new language. All these things are major factors."

"And there is the football. Who would not want to play for Real Madrid?"

Owen, who is out of contract in 18 months time, has recently been linked with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Chelsea.
