Newcastle seek loan for Real Madrid's Owen

Newcastle United are trying to strike a loan deal with Real Madrid for Michael Owen.
 
The Guardian says it is Newcastle's understanding that Owen's representatives are due to meet Manchester United shortly and the Magpies are realistic about their potential part in Owen's proceedings.

But Newcastle still think they have a chance of signing him, even if it is only for one season on loan.

"If we get the names that are on the list I gave the chairman I'd be confident of a very good season," said Toon boss Graeme Souness.

"[But] I wouldn't hang myself on qualifying for the Champions League."
