Newcastle asked Real Madrid about Woodgate

Newcastle United asked Real Madrid about defender Jonathan Woodgate in talks over Michael Owen, it has been revealed.

The Guardian says Woodgate's name was mentioned in discussions with Real Madrid as they accepted Toon's £16 million bid for Owen.

Chairman Freddy Shepherd has made it clear previously that he would gladly welcome the former Newcastle centre-half back to Tyneside.
