Montella reveals Real nightmare

Vincenzo Montella says that playing the Champions League game against Real Madrid on Tuesday was a nightmare after what had happened in the USA.

Real eventually won the game 2-1 and while Montella does not want to make excuses for the defeat, he believes the game should never have gone ahead.

"On the bus going to the Stadium, all we could talk about was what happening in the USA. Nobody was even thinking about the game with Real Madrid," he said during a press conference.

"I'm not looking for an excuse to justify our defeat but we just weren't in the right state of mind to focus on a football game. That match should have been cancelled.

"I would have been of the same opinion even if we would have won the game. After such a horrendous tragedy, playing should have been the last thing to do."

"We were all shaken by what we had seen and I am sure it was the same for Real players."

He added: "We lost a big chance for the world of sports, the chance to express our solidarity for a tragedy that brought nothing but death and destruction to thousands of families."
