Militao discusses injury return and backs Vinicius after Real Madrid’s victory over AEK Athens: ‘I’m in a lot of pain

Eder Militao marked an important milestone in his return from injury by completing 90 minutes for Real Madrid during their dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory over AEK Athens.
The Brazilian centre-back had endured several months on the sidelines, and his appearance in Greece was a significant step towards regaining full fitness under Jose Mourinho.
Militao was one of the major talking points following the encounter, not only because of his return to the starting line-up but also because he managed to complete the entire contest.
Speaking to Real Madrid TV after the final whistle, the defender admitted that he was experiencing considerable pain despite feeling positive about his recovery.
Completing a full match was a considerable achievement for Militao after an extended period away from competitive football.
His recovery followed a serious hamstring injury that required surgery and kept him out for approximately six months.
He initially returned as a substitute against Sevilla on October 18 before being gradually reintegrated into the first team.
The Champions League encounter against AEK Athens was therefore particularly important, giving Mourinho an opportunity to assess the Brazilian’s ability to handle the physical demands of a full 90 minutes.
Speaking about his condition, Militao told Real Madrid TV, “I feel really good, but I’m in a lot of pain.
”
“I’m happy to be back and able to do what I love so much, after six months out, and to be able to play 90 minutes.”
“We all need to be ready because we’ve got a lot of matches coming up. Mourinho is handling it very well.”
Militao also addressed the situation surrounding Vinicius, who has faced criticism following a series of performances that have not matched his usual attacking influence.
The Brazilian winger has struggled to find the consistency and goal contributions expected of him, but his compatriot believes there is little reason to doubt his ability to turn things around.
“He’s a lad who’s cheerful every day. Things aren’t going the way he’d like at the moment, but he’s someone who never stops working.”
“I think everyone can see that he keeps trying and trying, and unfortunately the goals just aren’t coming. But I think he’s still making a contribution; he’s contributing a lot.”
“He’s a very important player for us within our team. I think that, when the time is right, he’ll shake off this run of bad luck.”
“He’s someone who deserves so much, and I think he’ll come back stronger than ever,” he concluded.
