Milan success has knock-on effect for Grasshoppers

AC Milan's win in the Champions League final last month has had pleasing repercussions for four of Europe's championship-winning sides.

Carlo Ancelotti's team, who beat Juventus on penalties after a goalless final in Manchester, will enter next season's competition as the holders, and go directly into the group stage along with Juventus and Inter Milan.

AC Milan finished third in Serie A but will not need to take up the slot that would have earned them in the third qualifying round.

That has now gone to Swiss champions Grasshoppers, as Switzerland are the highest-ranking country under UEFA's coefficient not to have a team in the third qualifying round.

Grasshoppers won the Swiss league title on Saturday, beating last season's Champions League surprise package Basel into second place.

Romania's Rapid Bucharest, Hungary's MTK Budapest and NK Maribor of Slovenia -- all newly-crowned domestic champions -- have been shunted up from the first qualifying round to the second.

UEFA had to move three teams up to maintain the mechanics of the draw after ruling that Azerbaijan would not be allocated a place in next season's competition.

The draw for the first and second qualifying rounds will be made on June 20.
