Milan set up Inter showdown

AC Milan have set up a semi-final showdown with city rivals Internazionale FC after a dramatic 3-2 UEFA Champions League quarter-final victory against AFC Ajax tonight.

Jon Dahl Tomasson was the hero for Milan, scoring the winning goal in added time, after coming on as a substitute. The Danish striker only entered the action in the 83rd minute when it seemed as if Ajax were on course to go through courtesy of their two away goals.

Filippo Inzaghi had put the Italian side in front at the San Siro with a close-range header after 30 minutes only for another second-half substitute, Jari Litmanen, to draw the Dutch champions level in the 63rd minute. However, two minutes later, Inzaghi burst forward and his deflected cross fell invitingly for Andriy Shevchenko to head his side in front again.

Steven Pienaar scrambled home his side’s second equaliser in the 78th minute but there was still time for Tomasson's late intervention. Milan, who set up tonight’s second-leg victory after a goalless first leg in Amsterdam a fortnight ago, will now play Inter in the two-legged semi-final for the right to reach the final on 28 May.
