Mbappe can terminate PSG contract if smear allegations are proven amid Real Madrid links

It has been a difficult week for Paris Saint-Germain. The French champions were rocked by speculations suggesting Kylian Mbappe’s desire to leave the club in January amid disagreements with the board.
It was followed by Mediapart’s investigative report on PSG’s use of a “digital army” called Digital Big Brother to launch a smear campaign against Mbappe back in 2019.
The attacker, at the time, had made headlines after revealing updates on his future. He suggested that his future could lie elsewhere, which had put PSG under a lot of pressure to keep hold of the attacker.
According to the Mediapart report, PSG had subsequently launched a smear campaign against the Frenchman online. He was not the only target either, with the club allegedly targeting his compatriot Adrien Rabiot and several other players and media outlets.
In light of these allegations, RMC Sport has conducted an interview with a sports lawyer, who suggests Mbappe could be in a position to terminate his contract at PSG if the allegations against the club are proven.
"Professional players are bound to their club by a fixed-term employment contract, recalls the lawyer. This type of contract can only be broken in specific cases such as serious misconduct. For example, it has been retained in cases of physical, verbal violence or abuse of freedom of expression," says Tatiana Vessine, a sports lawyer.
"If it were proven and attributable to the employer, therefore the club, it would in my opinion be serious enough to justify a breach of contract," she added.
The ability to terminate the contract could prove to be quite significant, not only for Mbappe but also for Real Madrid, who have been eyeing a move for the Frenchman for quite some time now.
The Whites were heavily linked with a move for the former AS Monaco starlet in the summer. But the player opted to remain at PSG, subsequently signing a bumper contract extension.
However, with Mbappe’s future at PSG once again coming under the microscope, links to Real Madrid have surfaced yet again, with reports claiming that the 23-year-old wants a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.
It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the French international in the coming months.
