Man Utd's Ronaldo may be overlooked by Real Madrid

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo's hopes of joining Real Madrid could have been ended last night by the Spanish club's presidential election.

He was hoping for a victory for Juan Miguel Villar Mir, with whom he has agreed a deal to move to Madrid, but it has emerged that Ronaldo is determined to join Real no matter what.

His hopes may have been hit, however, by the narrow election victory of Ramon Calderon, with Villar Mir third - though Villar Mir is threatening to appeal against the result in a dispute over postal votes.
