Real Madrid sporting director Jorge Valdano has hit out at claims by Bayern Munich general manager Uli Hoeness that the Santiago Bernebau had become "a circus" after the e35-million arrival of David Beckham.
"If we wanted to set up a real circus we would have recruited Mr Hoeness," Valdano told Berlin news- paper Tagesspiegel am Sonntag.
"He could present our spectacle magnificently."
Hoeness claimed Real had developed into a circus with England captain Beckham joining the likes of Luis Figo, Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and Zinedine Zidane in Madrid, but Valdano claimed the emphasis was on entertainment.
"If we were to build two stadia alongside each other, one for Real Madrid and one for Bayern Munich, selling tickets at the same price, where would you go?" questioned Valdano. "Where would Mr Hoeness go?"
Valdano was a member of the victorious Argentina side that defeated Germany 3-2 in the 1986 World Cup final in Mexico.
