Madrid plays Barcelona Nov. 28-29 and April 10-11

Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and the rest of Real Madrid’s high-priced roster will play at Barcelona on the weekend of Nov. 28-29 and host their rival on April 10 or 11 in the most anticipated matches of the Spanish league season.

The season opens the weekend of Aug. 29-30, the Primera Liga said Friday, following the opening weekends of the German Bundesliga (Aug. 7-9), the English Premier League (Aug. 15-16) and Italy’s Serie A (Aug. 22-23). The 38-game league season ends May 16, giving players time with their national teams ahead of the start of the World Cup on June 11.

Madrid opens at home on Aug. 30 against Deportivo La Coruna, with Barcelona starting the following day at home against Sporting Gijon in a match pushed back to Monday.

Real Madrid started practice Friday after spending $290 million to add midfielders Ronaldo and Kaka, the last two FIFA players of the year, along with forward Karim Benzema and defender Raul Albiol.

Kaka, Albiol, defender Sergio Ramos, goalkeeper Iker Casillas and midfielder Daniel Parejo won’t join the team until July 27. Ahead of its opener, Real Madrid has exhibitions at Toronto FC on Aug. 7 and against D.C. United two days later at Landover, Md.

ESPN will start sharing U.S. television rights to the Spanish league this season with GolTV, which has broadcast the league for the past six seasons.
