Madrid mayor spoils championship party

Real have been hit by complaints from Madrid city mayor Jose Maria Alvarez del Manzano about their title celebrations in the city.

The mayor claims that the club did not receive permission from the local council to climb the Cibeles fountain late on Saturday night. Real logged their 28th championship win after beating Aalves 5-0 on Saturday and later on, joined over a million fans at the Plaza de Cibeles - the customary meeting point after an important victory.

The entire squad climbed the statue in the centre of the roundabout to salute their supporters at around midnight. But Mayor, Manzano wants to put a stop to these kinds of incidents. "The city council didn't give the go ahead for the players to climb onto the fountain, this is not on," he said on Tuesday. "We're delighted that Real Madrid have won the league but that's not an excuse to invade the city's statues and monuments. This absurd tradition will have to end".

The Cibeles fountain was designed by Ventura Rodriguez and has been one of Madrid's landmarks since 1792. Real's neighbours Atletico Madrid traditionally celebrate their triumphs at the Neptune statue, situated nearly half a mile away. Manzano however, has promised to put an end to celebrations in the street, saying: "The post-match parties should take place in the appropriate surroundings - the clubs' stadiums".

The Madrid city council are annoyed that during Saturday's festivities, fans caused damage to the surrounding area that will cost tax payers more than six million pesetas ($US 31,000).
