Lyon turn down Real offer for Diarra

French champions Lyon confirmed that they have turned down a 20-million-euro offer from Spanish side Real Madrid, and a list of several players to choose from, in exchange for Malian international midfielder Mahamadou Diarra.

Lyon official Bernard Lacombe said they had been surprised by the manner of the approach made by the Spanish club, and the reaction of the player who insists he wants to play in the Madrid-based side.

"Real's approach is a bit surprising and we're astonished by the reaction of the player. You don't just snap your fingers like that," said Lacombe.

"I understand the player's reaction a bit at being contacted by Real Madrid."

"At the same time the Madrid club announce that he is a priority for their recruitment policy but let us know that two weeks before the transfer window closes."

Diarra, meanwhile, insists he doesn't want to miss the chance of a lifetime.

"In my head it's clear I want to play for Real," said the 25-year-old.

"An offer to wear the jersey of a club like Real is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I don't want to let this chance slip by."
