Luxemburgo puts Real win down to attitude and preparation

Real Madrid coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo put their 1-0 victory over Juventus down to the players' determined attitude and his own detailed preparation for the Champions League knockout round match.

"I was delighted with the attitude of my players," Luxemburgo said after the first leg. "In games like this you can't just play at 99 percent, you have to play at 100 percent and that's what we did tonight."

Real dominated at the Bernabeu but only pierced the Juve defence once when centre back Ivan Helguera sent a glancing header into the top corner after David Beckham whipped in a trademark free kick from the left just after the half-hour mark.

"We tried free kicks like the one Beckham took 30 or 40 times behind closed doors in training yesterday because we knew it would be very important and it paid off," said the Brazilian, who was making his debut in European competition.

"For me Real played a great game and 1-0 was a good result for us," he said. "But I felt we had enough chances to have scored two or three."

"I expected Juve to play on the break like they did and to try and use long balls up front to their forwards. But we were ready for that and always had five players covering back to deal with their counter-attacks."

However, Luxemburgo, who guided Santos to the Brazilian title before joining Real at the end of last year, is well aware that the tie is far from over yet.

"This is a game of 180 minutes and all we've done is won the first half. The important thing is to think that the key to qualification will be in Turin not here in Madrid."

His opposite number Fabio Capello was not unhappy with the result but said he was disappointed that Real had caused his side so many problems from set pieces.

"It was not a bad result for us despite the fact that we lost the game," said the former Real Madrid boss.

"We played moments of good football but I was disappointed that we suffered so much at dead ball situations."

"The goal came from a free kick and (Real's Walter) Samuel headed against the bar from a corner. We shouldn't have allowed their players to have challenged for the ball."

Capello also stressed the loss of playmaker Pavel Nedved after a clash of heads with Real defender Raul Bravo just three minutes after the goal had limited Juve's ability to respond.

"While Nedved was on the pitch we looked dangerous in attack but when he went off it took his replacement (Ruben Olivera) a long time to warm up."
