Liverpool on outer as Morientes chooses Monaco

Liverpool appear to be losing their fight to land Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes next month.

The Spaniard has declared he wants a permanent move to AS Monaco after failing to cement a starting place at Real this season.

"Going back to Monaco would be a good option for me," said Morientes. "I know the club and the way things work there and I have great memories of my time there. I continue to follow their results and I know that things haven't been going that well in the league for them this season."

"When that happens it's only natural that there is talk about bringing players in and, given my situation at Real, it's inevitable that I'll be linked."

"Things aren't going well for me here but whether I stay or not is not down to me. That's down to the club. If they indicate they're willing to sell me then I'll look at the options."
