Valery Karpin bagged the winning goal in the 64th minute.

The Russian international capitalized on a poor pass by keeper Casillas and calmly poked it in.

Casillas had been trying to pass it to his defenders but mis-kicked it and Karpin was left with a simple finish.

Kovacevic nearly made it 2-0 late in the game but Salgado managed to clear the headed shot off the line.

Madrid, who were without David Beckham, were unable to get their passing game going and failed to create quality scoring chances.

Raul had their best chance, after a nice combination between Figo and Zidane, but his shot sailed over.
