La Liga strike continues as LFP & AFE fail to reach agreement on Tuesday

The players' strike in La Liga continues after a new round of talks between the Spanish football League (LFP) and the footballers' union (AFE) failed to produce an agreement.

The two sides will reconvene on Wednesday at the league's headquarters, with the postponement of the second round of Primera and Segunda division fixtures looking more and more likely.

After a six-hour meeting on Tuesday evening, no agreement was reached for the strike to be called off before the weekend, and LFP president Jose Luis Astiazaran stated the two sides are still some distance apart.

"It is not about accepting or imposing oneself. The meeting was very intense. We will keep working internally to follow our position," Astiazaran told the Spanish press.

"I cannot say yet whether there will be league matches [this weekend]. We hope so, but it is up to us to settle our differences."

The players' strike saw the the start of the league delayed last weekend, with AFE demanding a guaranteed fund to protect wages in case clubs become insolvent, and the possibility that footballers can get out of their contracts if they are not paid for three consecutive months.
