Basque central defender Aitor Karanka is close to signing a new deal with Real Madrid that would see him extend his stay at the Bernabeu.
Karanka, together with his agent, met with Real's sports manager Jorge Valdano on Thursday afternoon to discuss the player's extension.
Karanka started out in Bilbao at Athletic Club where his brother, David, is currently based.
He joined Real Madrid in 1997 and, after three inconsistent seasons, has finally carved out a regular place in the starting 11.
Karanka's contract with the Madrileno outfit is due to expire in June 2002 and both parties are eager to see the player carry on at the club for many years to come.
Valdano has explained to the player that any new deal would involve more performance-related bonuses - a new policy at the club for all signings and extentions.
