Inter Turn To Morientes

Internazionale are set to move for Fernando Morientes as they meet Real Madrid officials to tie up the signing of Santiago Solari.

The Serie A giants want a striker to replace the injured Hernan Crespo and are ready to ask Madrid to name their price for the out of favour striker.

Inter's sports director, Giuliano Terraneo, is to approach the Spanish club before the end of this week.

A loan deal could be on the cards with the player keen to prove that he would be a success in Italy.

Morientes has been linked with a move to Roma and Tottenham Hotspur, but neither offer has tempted the Spanish international away from the Bernabeu.

"For the moment we are only negotiating with Real Madrid midfielder Santiago Solari," explained Inter president Massimo Moratti.

"But if Cuper believes he needs another attacker then we will go down that path."

Madrid have made it clear that Morientes is now surplus to their requirements after the signing of Ronaldo in the summer.

The European champions also have Guti and young Javier Portillo to partner Raul in attack.

Madrid and Inter have agreed the deal for Solari and are now waiting for the midfielder to agree to the terms of the move.

There were complications when he broke down in training with a thigh strain, but Madrid's medical staff have said that it will only keep him out for a few days.
