Iglesias to play at Bernabeu

Famous Spanish singer Julio Iglesias has been pencilled in to perform at the Bernabeu for Real Madrid's 100th birthday.

Iglesias, father of pop star Enrique, is a life-long Real fan and approached the club's president Florentino Perez last month.

As a 19-year-old, he was a goalkeeper at the Bernabeu but struggled to make the reserves.

Iglesias's fortunes changed when he won a singing contest in Benidorm in the early 70s, convincing him to hang up his boots.

As well as the concert, the club have plans for a world-wide Real Madrid day, which will be celebrated with a star-studded match at the Bernabeu on December 18 of next year. Also in the pipeline is a special edition of the Trofeo Bernabeu that will feature a host of the world's top sides.

Real are hoping to attract top-name clubs like AC Milan, Boca Juniors, Inter, Bayern Munich and Manchester United for the tournament.

Plans to end the Tour of Spain cycling race in the stadium grounds with the overall leader sporting a white jersey instead of the usual yellow one have been mooted.

Real will have a busy birthday year with yet another game scheduled for a venue outside of Spain. New York has been suggested, where the Merengues would take on the United States national team.
