Hume brings Real Madrid to Derry

Derry City are set to entertain Spanish giants Real Madrid in a pre-season friendly at the Brandywell in August.

The League of Ireland outfit, financial strugglers during the season just finished, have managed to attract the 2000 Champions League winners through Nobel Peace Prize winner John Hume – their local MP and MEP.

Hume is good friends with a number of top political figures in Spain. Hume's daughter acted as interpreter for all correspondence between Derry and the Bernabeu before an agreement was reached.

The Candystripes have already played Celtic and Manchester United in the past 12 months, but this latest fixture represents their biggest coup yet.
