Holders Mallorca handed tough tie in King's Cup

King's Cup holders Real Mallorca were handed a tough tie away to second division Levante in Friday's draw for the second round.

The islanders, who won the competition in such convincing fashion last season, are struggling in the lower reaches of the Primera Liga this term and now face the promotion favourites from the Mediterranean city of Valencia.

Now coached by the experienced Luis Aragones, Mallorca are hoping they have turned the corner following their 2-0 win over Primera Liga leaders Deportivo Coruna earlier this week, but Levante, who have several former top flight players in their ranks, will be optimistic of causing an upset.

Second division side Leganes, who hail from a modest working class suburb on the outskirts of Madrid, hit the jackpot when they were paired against league champions Real Madrid, while Ciudad de Murcia were handed another lucrative tie at home to Barcelona.

Leganes, 10th in the second division, have undergone a major transformation since new owner Argentine music tycoon Daniel Grinbank brought in a string of his compatriots to boost the club's playing and coaching staff and will be grateful of a big pay-day when they host their illustrious neighbours.

The draw threw up just two all-Primera Liga ties with Valencia entertaining struggling Murcia and Celta Vigo hosting bottom club Espanyol.

League leaders Deportivo Coruna will be wary of their trip to third division Gimnastica Torrelavega, who claimed the scalp of Athletic Bilbao in the first round.

Third division Cultural Leonesa, who were the only other side to knock out top flight opponents when they defeated Albacete, have been rewarded with a tie against Atletico Madrid.

All games will be played on December 17. Under King's Cup rules, with the exception of the two all-first division ties, the matches will be played at the ground of the lower ranked team.
