Guti: Real Madrid Failed To Respond As A Team Against Lyon In The Second Half

Real Madrid crashed out of the Champions League round of 16 for the sixth year in a row after a 1-1 draw with Lyon on the night saw them eliminated 2-1 on aggregate.

Captain Guti could not hide his disappointment following another unceremonious exit.

"It’s a real shame. We showed once again that in the big games, we are unable to go for the kill," he said in an interview with Telemadrid at the final whistle.

"We should have been more of a team instead of being too individualistic. In the second half, we did not play as we should have."

"They [Lyon] started to attack when they saw that we weren’t pressing the game like we did before the break. That was a time to be a team."

"Now, we can only think about La Liga, which is all we have left," he added.

When asked if the disappointment of elimination was doubly painful due to the fact that this year’s Champions League final will be held at the Santiago Bernabeu, Guti responded bluntly: "Every elimination is painful. And so is this one."
