Gunners capture Campbell

Reported Real target Sol Campbell has signed for Arsenal on a free transfer, with the former Spurs skipper penning a four-year deal.

The Gunners called a lunchtime press conference on Tuesday, where it was expected they were going to unveil Ipswich keeper Richard Wright as Arsene Wenger's third summer signing following the arrivals at Highbury of Francis Jeffers and Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

But instead Campbell's shock move across north London from Tottenham was revealed, ending months of speculation over his future.

Inter Milan and Barcelona had both claimed they were confident of capturing the 26-year-old, but he has decided to stay in the Premiership.

Campbell, who was also wanted by Liverpool, said: "The decision was made for footballing reasons. The manager and the set-up - everything about Arsenal - is geared to winning and that's why I've joined them.

"It was a very difficult decision. When I was at Tottenham I played my heart out for the club but there comes a time when you have to reconsider things."

"I've done everything right. The bottom line is I decided I wanted to come to Arsenal and I'm very happy to do so."
