Gimnastic return to the Primera Liga after 56 years

Gimnastic Tarragona returned to the Primera Liga for the first time in 56 years after a 0-0 draw at Xerez on Saturday earned them the point they needed to secure promotion.

The result left Gimnastic top of the Spanish second division with 75 points and two games left to play, three clear of Recreativo Huelva and six ahead of Levante who occupy the final promotion berth.

Gimnastic were promoted to the second division only two seasons ago after spending most of the previous 25 years in the regionally-based third division.

The Catalan club's only previous spell in the top flight was between 1947 and 1950.
