For Becks, every day's Christmas with Real Madrid

David Beckham will be devastated if he fails to emulate team-mates Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Zinedine Zidane and win a trophy in his first season with Real Madrid.

He hopes to do even better and repeat the stunning Treble he achieved with Manchester United in 1999 with his new team in the La Liga, Spanish Cup and Champions League.

"To be part of this team and not win anything would be devastating. I definitely want to win trophies this year," the England captain told The News Of The World.

"I badly want the Treble. Since I've moved here, I realise what football means to the city and, with the players we've got, we can do it."

"But if we don't, then we'll do it next year."

In the five months since he joined Real, Beckham has all but silenced the doubters.

With the Spanish League on hold because of the mid-winter break, Real are top and Beckham, who is using the week's rest to recover from a thigh injury, is flying in his new central midfield position.

He said: "I've achieved what I had set out to do up to this point of the season. Before I came here, people were saying I wasn't good enough to play in Spain and with these players."

"But these last five months for me personally couldn't have gone any better. I'm proud of the way I've performed and the way fans have responded to me gives me great pleasure. It's amazing."

He revealed the emotional moment he knew he had been accepted by the Real faithful a fortnight ago at the end of his side's 2-1 triumph over title rivals Deportivo La Coruna at the Bernabeu Stadium.

When Argentinians Aldo Duscher and Lionel Scaloni squared up to him, Beckham simply turned to salute the 80,000 fans in the Bernabeu.

For two minutes, they responded with deafening chants of his name - an unprecedented display of affection for a foreigner.

"When the crowd responded that way at the end of the Deportivo game, I must say it was the best moment in my Spanish career," he said.

"You could say it was evidence that I've proved my worth here and there's no greater satisfaction than having those people who pay to watch us express their views like this."

But his clearest ambition is to win Euro 2004 with England.

He added: "Euro 2004 is so important to me as England captain. Of course, it's the same for the rest of the players."

Beckham also gave his backing to Roman Abramovich's spending spree at Chelsea. The Russian had at one time even spoke of his intention to bring him back to the Premiership in a blue jersey.

He said: "I do not think that Abramovich is or will be a menace for football, absolutely not."

"I also do not think, as some have said, that he is a dangerous man for clubs like Manchester United and Real Madrid."

"His idea is to sign the best footballers in the world and there's nothing wrong with that."
