Figo returns to training, fit for Greece match

Portugal's star midfielder Luis Figo returned to training and will be fit for the squad's Euro 2004 opening match against Greece on June 12, the team's doctor revealed.

Portugal's star midfielder Luis Figo returned to training and will be fit for the squad's Euro 2004 opening match against Greece on June 12, the team's doctor revealed.

"Figo has trained without any limitations," doctor Henrique Jones told a news conference on Tuesday.

"He complained of a pain in a muscle in his left leg yesterday, which was not a cause for worry at all, but we decided to limit his training."

Jones was speaking after the Portuguese squad held a 90-minute practice session behind closed doors on Tuesday morning at it's training camp at Alcochete, located some 25 kilometres (15 miles) east of Lisbon.

The 31-year-old Real Madrid player was confined to the gym on Monday where he worked with team physiotherapists.

Sporting Lisbon defender Roberto Beto, who had trained normally with the rest of the Portuguese squad in the morning, joined Figo in the afternoon after he also complained of a pulled leg muscle.

Jones said he was optimistic that Beto would be fit for the match against Greece on Saturday in the northern city of Oporto but he cautioned it was still too soon to tell.

"We have to wait at least 24 hours," he said.

Portugal, who are in Group A, will also face Spain and Russia in the first round of the three-week European championship which it hosts.
