Figo may not retire after all

Real Madrid's Portuguese midfielder Luis Figo hinted on Wednesday that he may not quit international soccer after Euro 2004.

The 2001 world player of the year said last month he planned to retire from internationals after the tournament in Portugal and declined to give a reason.

However, Figo told reporters on Wednesday that his plans might change.

"That is my thinking (retiring), but since I never make definitive long-term plans, well, I can't say it's going to be that way," Figo, 31, said in remarks carried on state radio RDP.

"My thinking is to retire after the European (championship). However, at the right time we'll see about my future."

Figo has a contract with Real Madrid until 2006 and has played 97 times for his country. Portuguese Soccer Federation chairman Gilberto Madail said on Tuesday he hoped to see Figo continue to play internationally.

Figo is set to play in Portugal's home friendly against Greece on Saturday. He strained ankle ligaments during Real Madrid's 4-1 loss at Seville on Sunday but a team doctor said he was expected to recover for the match in Aveiro.
