Figo in no hurry to extend contract with Real Madrid

Portuguese star Luis Figo has said he is in no hurry to extend his contract with Spanish champions Real Madrid.

"At this moment I have two more years on my contract and I don't see any reason to change that situation," he told reporters on the sidelines of a charity appearance in Lisbon.

Asked if there was any rush to sign a contract extension, Figo said: "On my part there isn't."

Real Madrid have extended the contract of two of their stars in recent weeks.

Brazil World Cup winner Ronaldo, whose contract like Figo's expires in 2006, signed on for two more years on Tuesday, just two weeks after French playmaker Zinedine Zidane decided to extend until 2007.

His contract had been due to run out in 2005.

Spanish players Raul, Guti and Michel Salgado have also signed new contracts recently.

When the club announced Ronaldo had extended his contract, Real director Emilio Butragueno told reporters "we're trying to maintain the nucleus of the side for years to come."

Figo said he had not been approached for a contract extension.

The 31-year-old player hinted in January that after four years with Real Madrid he would like to move away from Spanish football.

"I can't deny I would like to try something else. The change would not be for economic motives but for the need to face new challenges as I have won everything you can win in Spain," he said.

He signed from bitter rivals Barcelona in the summer of 2000 for what was then a world record fee of 46 million euros.

Figo, who has been the subject of speculation linking him with moves to England or Italy, said last year he planned to retire from internationals after the Euro 2004 finals which Portugal will host this summer.
