Luis Figo has received the backing of the Portuguese government for the creation of a foundation for young people bearing his name.

The Real Madrid CF midfield player met with the country’s prime minister António Guterres to discuss the organisation, which will work in the social and sporting fields. Figo confirmed the foundation would bear his name and added that he would be the main financial backer of the Lisbon-based project.
The Portuguese international, said the first step of his new project would be the approval, in December, of the statutes of the foundation. Regarding the necessary investment, Figo said he would "give what is necessary" and added the government would "help in what it is at its range".
"In a first phase, the foundation will have to know all the social problems of the young people, because the main goal of this foundation will be giving an opportunity to those who were not fortunate in their lives," Figo added.
Figo added that the foundation, which will be fully operational by 2004, the year Portugal hosts the UEFA European Championship, would be 'a non-governmental and non-profitable organisation' but he was delighted to have the Government's total support and help.
